Category: Geeks r Us
hello everyone,
I am releasing my virtual machines to the public. These are vmware images and work well.
I currently have Windows 95 and 98. I won't post anything newer than that, mainly because Microsoft still supports those operating systems (such as XP) and they are thus not abandoned. I'm not even sure if it is legal to be posting 95/98, but Microsoft dropped support for these OS's a while back.
Windows ME is also unsupported. However I have never used Windows ME and therefore have no VM of that operating system.
You can find the zip archives at
www.eurpod.com/vmware
Windows 95: it works fine. Sadly I had to use the soundblaster 16 soundcard by specifying "sound.virtualDev="sb16"" in the virtual machine's vmx file. You will notice that soundblaster 16 cuts off jaws speech at the end of letters and words, that's because it needs to constantly re-open the channel. I was unable to find a driver for es1371.
To use the Windows 95 VM, simply start the vmx file, wait a minute while the machine loads and hit enter to log on.
I have installed JAWS 5.10 in Windows 95. To start, hit control+escape (or the windows key), press p, j, and j. pjj! (peanut butter jelly joy? I always think of that for some odd reason)
Windows 98:
This is better than Windows 95. With the help of my sighted friend I was able to get it up and running - he built the VM for me actually, but I had to tweek it with jaws and other programs such as IE 5.
To use, run the vmx file, wait until the virtual machine loads and hit enter. The es1371 driver allows for better sound quality. However note that whilst jaws is running, you cannot play any other sound through the soundcard. This is probably because the es1371 driver used is not multi-channel. If you wish to use this as your mainstream OS and play music, you will have to silence JAWS with the control key after pressing enter or play on any sound file.
To start jaws, type in jaws60 or jaws6 in the run dialog, which you can access by hitting windows+R.
Note that no illegal software, cracks, or tools are included in these virtual machines. If you wish to activate JAWS, please due so using a genuine copy. The Windows 98 VM includes 6.0 with ILM, meaning that current auth numbers with remaning ILM counts can activate it regularly. JAWS 5.10, under Windows 95, requires an authorization key. I would suggest calling FS and seeing if they can give you one for the purposes of running virtual machines.
With that said. Your internet connection is bridged with the virtual machines. This means that Windows 95 and 98 are connected to the internet and I have browsed websites on my VM here. To use the internet, open Internet explorer and when the internet connection wizzard starts, choose "setup my connection manually" and select the dsl option.
Updated with the latest VMware tools to fix various video intercepting problems with JAWS.
If you have a virtual machine for Windows 3.1, including working sound, please let me know... I've failed to get that up and running for the last month or so... No luck :(
Have fun! Feel free to discuss Virtual machines in this thread :)
How on earth have you uploaded these when your on dialup?
school internet :) since I'm a senior that's what I do all day: upload and download! I crave the internet when I get to school practically.

@ poster 1 kudos to you sir! your vm of windows98 works grate!
I have a question. I managed to get 98, and when I try shutting down, it puts up an image and stays there. The only way I can shut it down is to press the power button on my laptop, have vmware pull up the message saying a vm is running (returning me to my xp host) and force-quitting vmware player through task manager. How is this supposed to work? Also, what is windows_neptune.zip?
OK, I managed the shutdown problem. Now, how would I connect my usb disk to my vm?
Awsum!
Did you also do a windows 2000 vm?
As far as the kitchensinc games under Windows 7 just try running or installing the vb runtime sixty files. You can get them from www.lightechinteractive.com under the things you will need to run our games section. If that doesn't work with installing the VB runtime files, make sure you know where the files are extracting to. By default, windows seven doesn't seem to have support for VB anymore. This should fix it though. On some systems, when you install the main setup.exe file with the life game from the winkit.zip file, that installs under program files with a 3 86, but the files for the rest of the games just extract to program files without the 3 86. Just look for the kitchensinc folder under the program files folder without the 3 86, then cut or copy all the files from there and go to the program files folder with the 3 86 look for the folder and paste them into that folder. Then everything should run fine. Good luck and I hope this helps someone in some way.
believe it or not the main setup program will install the vb runtime files.
